Reggae and dub pioneer Lee Scratch Perry is the subject of a brand new documentary called Vision Of Paradise. German filmmaker Volker Schaner spent an epic 15 years documenting Mr Perry’s universe, sprawling across Jamaica, Ethiopia, Germany, Switzerland and London.
The documentary is a narrative journey of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s legacy from his beginnings working under Coxsone Dodd in 1950s Jamaica to founding The Upsetters and the Black Ark recording studio, where he worked with Bob Marley, Junior Murvin, The Congos and many others. There are also plenty of ethereal dream-like sequences that project his thoughts and visions with accompanied animation.
Dennis Bovell, Martin ‘Youth’ Glover and Adrian Sherwood are a few of the contributors that are featured in the film and it’s set to premiere in the UK at the East End Film Festival in London on July 4. In the meantime, watch the trailer above and you can buy tickets for the premiere here, which includes a Q&A afterwards with Perry and the director.
